I found another interesting word on the census - a Looker. This one is difficult to precisely pin down. Rather like those who called themselves ‘dealers’ but declined to say what they dealt in, a looker could be one of the following:
Hedge Looker - someone who supervised the repairs to fences and hedges
Leave Looker - an municipal inspector of markets
Over Looker - sometimes called an overseer and usually found in mills
Looker - someone who cared for sheep belonging to several owners
I happened across this word whilst looking at a place called Birds Green in the locale of Beauchamp Roding, Essex. Given the rural nature of the settlement, I’m inclined to believe that this chap was either #1 or #4.
