For those who are unfamiliar with him, Dick Gregory came to prominence in the early 1960s. He was one of the first Black comedians to achieve mainstream success.
In addition to being a comedian, Gregory was a writer, and civil rights activist who worked alongside MLK and Medgar Evers. He marched in Selma and was even jailed in Birmingham, Alabama,
I’d forgotten about it until I saw this clip, but I had the opportunity to see Gregory give a talk in the seventies when I was a student at the University of Arkansas.
The lecture hall had as many white students in attendance as Black students, underscoring Gregory’s appeal across the racial divide.
