In a reading on why Australia caved to the Israeli lobby, appointed a Jewish envoy to Parliament and allowed this envoy with strong ties to Israel, to stifle academic freedom in universities, and now proposing to censor Gaza coverage at our public funded broadcasters, I said “it’s the US government. They’re strong arming PM Albanese.” It turns out that statement is true.

During the Biden presidency, after Oct 7, and as protests in support of Palestinians in Gaza rose across the world and here too, a global statement condemning antisemitism was proposed by the then US government. Australia chose not to sign onto this global statement.

“We really should have made a bigger deal out of it at the time,” the former (US) official told Jerusalem News Syndicate (JNS). “It was signed by dozens of countries. It was a strong statement, but any major U.S. ally should have signed onto it.”

Strike one against Australia. The second strike against us was when PM Albanese recognised a two state solution which would create the state of Palestine.

During the subsequent years and as the razing of GAZA continued and the civilian death toll rose along with the images of atrocities committed there, Australians turned out in solidarity against this unfolding genocide with massive public protests.

In a recent poll, 87% of young people in Australia said they do not trust Israel, yet our government…publicly supporting a separate Palestinian state after Oct 7, has seemingly done a backflip on reflecting the judgments of its own base. Why?

Two main reasons: the Bondi Beach murders in December 2025 where 14 Jews were massacred by a Muslim gunman and, secondly, the strong arm from the trump US government linking condemnation of Jew hatred with US/Australian partnership in the Indo Pacific. Turns out the American government noted Australia’s original decision not to sign onto that condemnation of antisemitism post Oct 7 and Australia’s recognition of a two state solution.

Both Israel and the trump government have ensured that criticism of Israel’s genocide in GAZA is equated with accusations of antisemitism, and PM Albanese has all but caved to the political and geopolitical power levers both countries are pulling here.

A weak PM and powerful outside forces seeking to shape public and political speech and protest laws here in Australia has not gone unnoticed by Australians. Simply trying to force us to ignore genocide and stop criticising Israel by suppressing our free political speech will not be tolerated here. Australians are waking up to the need to fight for our sovereignty and freedom in an unstable world.

As to how we ended up with a Jewish envoy to Parliament (whose husband incidentally was a major donor to a political campaign to prevent an Aboriginal Voice to Parliament), again the US/Israel influence ensured the envoy was placed in our Parliament.

“It took a “monumental effort” to get Australia to appoint the special envoy, Jillian Segal, according to the former U.S. official. Segal was on the short list for a long time, but “what held up her appointment was the fact that they couldn’t get the Muslim Australian community to coalesce around one candidate, because of this overriding value of social cohesion,” the former official said. (JNS sought comment from Segal.)”.

As my reading submitted, it was the US government putting pressure on Australia that is responsible for the outsized influence Israel is now having on our culture, education and freedom of speech.

Now we know, the question is why the Australian PM has floundered so badly when confronted by this power dynamic, literally selling our sovereignty and his own supporters down the creek.
