Let’s remove the gesture and pay attention to what he said in that moment.
“My heart is with you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured.”
The rhetoric of preserving civilization does not exist in a vacuum.
Historically, this language has served as a dog whistle for exclusionary policies, reinforcing racial and social hierarchies under the guise of protecting cultural or societal norms.
This very language is responsible for lack of affordable healthcare, modern day slavery, cost of living, wealth gap, access to education, etc.
It is about white supremacy, even without the salute.
