Donald Trump has been in office for only a few days, and of course he has made numerous headlines for his early actions.

I will gladly admit that there are a few things he’s done that I think are productive, at least at first glance. It’s good to know there are positives. Yet the vast majority of things he’s done so far seem bad.

He has made huge moves on upending unauthorized AND legal immigration. He attempted to violate the 14th Amendment. He federally renamed Mt. Denali and the Gulf of Mexico (which no one asked for). He tried to delegitimize all transgender people with an executive order. He began preparations to fire hundreds or thousands of federal workers, likely to replace them with loyalists. And he pardoned practically every single participant in the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol, including those guilty of physically attacking law enforcement.

The list goes on.

But in addition to all that, and getting relatively little attention, are all of the many steps he has taken to end or restrict vital actions fighting climate change. It is insane, and it’s frankly hard to believe the scope of his actions. We, the largest economy in the world, a global trend-setter, and one of the biggest polluters, are right now being set back decades on environmental protections. And all because one man is either woefully misinformed, or totally unwilling to put the planet’s welfare before his own personal political and financial interests.

It’s hard not to feel defeated right now. Climate change is literally the worst and biggest problem in the world, and it can be so easily made much, much worse for years to come. I have a hard time thinking what we can possibly do now; every little positive step seems insignificant in the face of this burgeoning catastrophe.
