This is ridiculous. The Trump administration just declared that nursing isn’t a “professional” degree.
The policy takes effect July 1.
Here’s what it means.
Right now, 11 professional fields get a higher federal student loan borrowing limit of $200,000. Medicine, law, dentistry, pharmacy, and a few others. Nursing is being tossed into the cheap seats at $100,000, lumped in with everything else. And Grad PLUS loans, the ones that cover what training actually costs, are gone.
So who eats the loss?
Nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and more. The exact people we are short on. We are in a nursing shortage right now, and the administration’s big idea is to make their training harder to afford.
The American Nurses Association is sounding the alarm. Experts say students will either quit or get funneled into riskier private loans.
Even some Republicans are trying to undo it. Sadly, they won’t before July 1, and 25 states are already suing to stop it.
How stupid can you get?
