What happened in the Oval Office was a vile display of classic abuser behavior. Every trick in that book, gaslighting, manipulation, coercion.
When Trump told Zelenskyy "you have allowed yourself to be in a very bad position" that's a textbook abuser tactic, blaming victims for their suffering. To suggest that Ukraine is to blame for being attacked and occupied by Russia is repugnant.
When Vance demanded that Zelenskyy say "thank you" this was another page out of the abuser's handbook, bullying victims into expressing gratitude for help they desperately need, only to accuse them of ingratitude if they stand up for themselves.
Trump said Zelenskyy is "not ready for peace." What he really meant is Ukraine is not surrendering, and that pisses him off. Another classic abuser technique, substituting a noble ideal for an ugly reality.
Trump repeatedly shouted at Zelenskyy that he has "no cards to play" and that "without us, you have nothing.” Abusers belittle their victims' efforts to coerce them to see themselves as powerless and dependent on the mercy of the abuser.
Trump constantly cut off Zelenskyy. "No, no, you’ve already said enough. You’re not in a position to dictate to us." Both to humiliate Zalenskyy and make it clear to him that he is seen as a subordinate.
Trump shifted responsibility for the whole situation to Ukraine: "You are playing with the lives of millions of people" and risking World War III. Another instantly recognizable abuser ploy.
Trump claimed that "if it weren’t for our weapons, this war would have ended in two weeks," seeking to erase any acknowledgment of Ukraine's sacrifice and heroic resolve, and recasting its war efforts as entirely dependent on U.S. support. Still more abuser behavior.
This is what we have representing our country on the world stage. An abuser in chief and a cowardly wingman.
