The mayor AND his wife committed suicide after forcing to view the horrors of the death camp.

The women who lived in the village hired people (probably starving inmates) to hose down their beautiful gardens because ash covered every flower, every leaf, every blade of grass. Twice a day.

Imagine thinking you could be washing your children's ashes away. Or wife’s. Or parents’. Or anyone’s.
