The app for independent voices

Hallo

Today I start using Substack

I used to like Twitter but always felt very constrained by the 144 limit

This brought problems for the irony-challenged, who misunderstood a lot of what I was trying to say

This is a particular problem for me because I seem to be regarded as ‘on the left’ by people on the right, and' ‘on the right’ by people on the left

Apparently this makes me controversial, and therefore box office poison

Contrary to what some in the far-right echo chamber have been saying this week, I have not been silenced. I’m right here folks. And I am ready to get started!

I’ve been absolutely terrified about starting a Substack. Wondering if my thoughts were really worthy of such a platform. But after leaving elected office - being one of a handful of Black politicians in a very white state - I just got to a point where I felt I needed to keep bearing witness.

And so here I am, with my thoughts on politics, power, and the revolution our times demand. I hope you enjoy! 🙏🏽✊🏽

You made it, you own it

You always own your intellectual property, mailing list, and subscriber payments. With full editorial control and no gatekeepers, you can do the work you most believe in.

I’m not a federal government employee but here are my ‘five bullets’ of what I ‘accomplished’ last week:

1. Pissed off JD Vance

2. Pissed off Elon Musk

3. Taped a hilarious convo with Hasan Minhaj (out next month)

4. Taped a great convo with Jemele Hill

5. Drank more than one chocolate milkshake.
