Most of Dhurandhar’s playlist is based on old songs: Ishq Jalaakar, Move(the Sonu Nigam part), Run Down the City etc. And yet, I don’t see the hatred typically thrown at remakes of Old Bollywood songs—the Masakali remake for example. In fact, I would argue the playlist is fantastic. The Dhurandhar music team built on the old songs, and added the modern styles of music to fuse a thrilling and energetic playlist. The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes, as Proust would say.
There is a certain glorification of ‘original’ work— and belittling of derivative in most disciplines, but perhaps a better metric to look at is value creation. It is great to do derivative work, as long as it is meaningful. Holds true for both the arts and the sciences—
