I consider myself an esoteric atheist. This means I only believe after direct experience. And indeed that this capacity of experience can be mystically cultivated.
In meditation, as the mind wanders upon Christ, a light fills the inner sight and enters the heart centre, becoming palpably warm.
I have nothing to do with doctrine or human institution. But I am grateful Christ is indeed a genuine Light, of which we humans have far too little.
