Same Struggle, Different Words: Sacrifice
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13
“Whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved all of humanity.” Quran 5:32
“As a mother would protect her only child with her life, even so let one cultivate a boundless love toward all beings.” Metta Sutta
Different words. Same struggle.
I’m still trying to sort out what I believe about God, faith, and what any of this really means.
But one thing that keeps showing up across traditions is the idea that a meaningful life usually requires something.
Sacrifice.
Most people think sacrifice only counts when it is dramatic.
War. Heroism. Bravery.
But a lot of sacrifice is quieter.
It is the parent who keeps showing up when they are exhausted.
The friend who answers the phone again.
The person who absorbs pain instead of passing it on.
Every tradition seems to point toward the same truth:
Love is not only something you feel.
It is something you carry. Something you show. Something you share.
