This is definitely true for the sciences. The picture is an excerpt about this phenomenon from a paper A.W.F. Edwards wrote about Fisher’s The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection. I guess the easy answer is that people have reduced attention spans, but who knows really.

It’s also worth noting Edwards published this in 2000, so the change seems to have occurred before the internet had the same influence it does today.

New books have lots of section breaks, section headings, etc. Why is this? What changed? Or is query naive
