It’s true and also, trans is a trojan horse for the rise in surrogacy and the idea that parenting rights are bought, not inherent. Surrogates don’t have rights as mothers, and so having staff trained not to slip in with “how’s mom doing today” when that woman does not have those rights helps industry. Surrogacy is now estimated to be valued at over US$14 billion a year (CNBC just reported it is expected to be US$149 billion by 2032). “Birthing person” “lactating person” “intended parent”—it’s all segmenting the roles of parenting into things that can be sliced and diced, bought and transferred by payment and contract. Surrogates can earn $200+ per week if they pump and ship their milk and still need all the lactation support, even though by contract, they are not “mother.” Trans is punchy in the headlines, but as far as I can tell, is and will continue to be a minority compared with surrogacy.
