Overall, the successive US administrations would argue that the US sphere of influence was to keep the “Old World” out of the “New World”, but over time, it would function primarily to endure US military dominance and economic interests. This sphere would be challenged most meaningfully during the Cold War, with direct Soviet involvement in Cuba and Nicaragua. But by the end of the Cold War in 1991, what little Soviet influence existed had ceased.
