Today, Chicago founding member, Walt Parazaider (woodwinds) died from complications from Alzheimer’s which he had been diagnosed with in 2020 and announced publicly in 2021. He was 81 years old. It was in his apartment in February of 1967 that the original 6 members of Chicago shook hands in a gentleman’s agreement to create a rock and roll band with horns. Bassist/vocalist Peter Cetera joined a few months later.

It could be argued I’ve been a Chicago fan since birth. The #1 song in the world the week I was born was “If You Leave Me Now.” Their music has been a constant in my life. Bringing me joy, easing my sorrow, acting as an adult security blanket of sorts.

Early in his 28 year tenure (1981-2009) in Chicago, grammy winning songwriter/keyboardist/vocalist, Bill Champlin wrote the song “Sweet Marie” specifically for Walt Parazaider. It includes a scorching sax solo! Unfortunately the song never appeared on any Chicago albums and was only played on the Chicago 17 tour (1984-85). As this song was written for Walt I felt it would be a fitting tribute and a fond farewell for him:
