These are legal ways of giving us a leg up, in this new battle against AI data centers.

1.) File a lawsuit under the "Open Meetings Act" (Immediate action). Every state has an Open Meetings Act or "Sunshine law." These laws strictly forbid city councils, county commissioners, and planning boards from holding secret votes or passing zoning changes without clear, advance public notice.

The Ground for Voiding the Project: If the government approved the data center behind closed doors or failed to post a public notice in accordance with local laws, their approval is illegal.

Real-World Actions: In places like Granbury, Texas and Jones County, Georgia, fed-up residents have banded together, hired a local attorney, and sued their city leaders. A successful Open Meetings lawsuit can force a judge to void the data center's zoning permits and completely stop the project.

2.) Pass a Citizen Ballot Initiative (bypassing politicians.) If the state or city government continues to ignore the public, citizens can strip power directly from them through Direct Democracy. Write a "Right to Know" Initiative: Organizers can draft a petition for a local or state ballot measure. The law should state: "No data center or high-density power user may be approved without a 180-day advance notice, public environmental studies, and a public hearing."
