Feature: The Relentless Rise of Reggie Cottrell

In a state where basketball is king, Reggie Cottrell has carved out a name for himself not by flash, but by fire. Literally.
The 6’3”, 170-pound guard from Harlan County (Class of 2026) has been a starter since he set foot on the varsity court — including a pivotal role on the 2023 state runner-up squad, where he introduced himself as one of Kentucky’s toughest competitors. But it was a moment off the court last July that revealed just how deep that toughness truly runs.
“I had a firework accident and lost a finger and half of another on my off hand,” Reggie says matter-of-factly.
Most players would have folded. Reggie Cottrell doubled down.
Now entering his senior season, he’s become the defensive anchor for Harlan County — the kind of player who guards the other team’s best player every night with a chip on his shoulder and pride in every possession.
“My biggest impact is definitely on the defensive side,” he says. “I take a lot of pride in that.”
His stats back it up:
📝 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game last season — numbers that only tell half the story. His ability to blow up actions, rotate on a dime, and contest shots with relentless effort has become his calling card. But this year, there’s more to the story.
“The biggest improvement in my game has been my 3-point shooting,” Reggie says. “Now I’m working on becoming a consistent 3-level scorer and tightening my handle.”
Harlan County Head Coach Kyle Jones sees the transformation in real-time:
“Reggie is a great athlete who takes pride in playing defense. He can guard multiple positions with his length and motor. His jumper is improving, and he can finish at or above the rim. But what separates him is his toughness — it’s unmatched.”
And it shows. Reggie plays every game like it’s his last — because he knows how fast the game can be taken away.
He’s not currently suiting up for an AAU team this summer, but college coaches will want to keep their eyes on June 20–21, when he hits the floor in Lexington, KY for a live period event with his Harlan County teammates.
“The best advice I’ve ever gotten is simple,” he says. ‘Play for each other, and play every play like it’s the last.’
When asked what fires him up on the court, he doesn’t hesitate:
“A little trash talk. Guarding the best players. That’s what fuels me.”
He’s built for that. He’s been through the fire — and came out stronger.
