What is a Johnny?
When I think of that question, one student graduating this year immediately comes to mind — Tariq Boney.
Yes, Tariq is committed to the University of Michigan to play football. Yes, he was a four-year starter and an Under Armour All-American. But those accomplishments alone do not define who he is.
Let me tell you about the kind of young man he has been at St. John’s.
Tariq helped lead the basketball team to a WCAC Final appearance and a DCSAA Championship. Then in the spring, he went out and won the discus at the WCAC Championships. Competing and excelling across three sports at a place like St. John’s is rare.
But what separates Tariq is not just what he accomplished athletically.
He was a Peer Minister. An honor roll student. A true ambassador for the school and everything it stands for. He carried himself with humility, respect, and pride in every hallway, classroom, practice, and competition.
In my 25 years at St. John’s, I’ve been fortunate to coach and work with a lot of great players and a lot of great young men. Tariq is both.
He is one of those people I will not soon forget.
That’s what a Johnny looks like.
