I hadn't intended to write about this. I was formulating a different post during a hike yesterday, but an email exchange about a conference took center stage instead.

When I started, I thought I was writing about a conference I decided not to attend. It became something much bigger: the quiet calculations many transgender people make before deciding whether an ordinary part of life still feels safe.

It's one of the more vulnerable things I've written lately. Judging by the early responses, it seems to be resonating.
