I wrote a play with Jayne Williamson with the support of New Perspectives Theatre in Nottingham - SiXteen - it is a piece of working class storytelling theatre, written, directed and acted by working class women - the story is set in 1984 - the Miners Strike is the backdrop but the story is about three girls turning sixteen in a small mining community in Nottinghamshire - they are learning how to be women and quickly - in scene 1 they are buy sweets from ‘Old bags’ sweet shop with dinner money, and yet in a matter of weeks they are in the factory making knickers and tights and are women - one of the girls ‘Lisa’ is supporting her family who are on strike - the other two girls have their own battles that become apparent - three girls stand amongst the audience and tell their story- its 1984 - and they look out into their lives and their futures and they ask ‘what if we dont win?’ what happens to us what happens if there are no pits, no factories, no work? Its unthinkable.
We toured the show in Ashfield where the play is set. But we want to take to other parts of the country because it has something important to say. Please support us - every £1 you donate gets doubled with #thebiggive
