A Frenchman, an American, and a Polish man are stranded on a deserted island. One morning they wake to find a gold lamp washed up on shore. They pick it up to wipe off the sand when a genie appears,”Thank you gentleman! I have been caged in that awful lamp for a thousand years. You have set me free and I will repay you. First, I will ensure a ship comes to rescue you this very day, but I will also grant you each one wish that will bless you upon your return home.”

The American says” the Frenchman is always going on about his beautiful wife. What great cook she is, and what a wonderful wife and mother she is” “ I wish i had a girl like that”.

“Granted!” Proclaims the genie. “ When you get home you will meet the woman of your dreams and your life and home will be bountiful.”

The Frenchman says”the American is always reminiscing about his grand home” “ a large ranch next to a creek overlooking his many acres.”” My family live in a small flat, in a crowded building”. “ I wish I could provide a home like the Americans for my family .”

“ Done!” Says the genie. “ Upon your return, you will learn that an estate in the south of France has become your inheritance.”

The Pole has been quiet, pensive. He lifts his head and says,”the Kowalski family who live down the road from me have a good cow….I wish it would die”.

My wife told me that joke before we were married. She immigrated to Chicago from Poland when she was a little girl. Before Reagan’s famous speech and the fall of Soviet communism. I’ve heard her tell it a few times over the years

This joke comes to mind when I think about American politics today, and the abuse being reveled in by the Republican Party. They seem to enjoy seeing the misfortune and emiseration of others. Even if the process robs their children of a nation to be proud of. No one can be proud to see their country following the the gangster regimes of the world. They intend to make dissenting citizens fearful and hopeless. They want us afraid of our government. They want people to turn in neighbors. They intend to make us all understand, that the law only applies when they determine it does. They want us to give up.

They want our cows to die!
