The app for independent voices

What’s maddening? Confusing? about this point-of-view about consultation - the one Poilievre is sharing - is how it is so incredibly self-defeating. Indian country is going more and more right wing. Natives live on Facebook and outside of the anti-Indigenous hate, the right wing ecosystem is finding a lot of support among Native people. Not a day goes by when I don’t see someone on rez sharing Canada Proud or even Rebel stuff. But, politically, the one thing we’re never going to move on is our rights, our sovereignty. Last time we bent on that, it didn’t work out well. But that doesn’t mean things can’t be built. If Poilievre went to reserve, sat with people, listened to people in power, and held a town hall - he’d actually do incredibly well. You could win pipeline support if you campaigned for it - instead of stamping your foot and demanding that we just submit. Treat Native people like citizens, and politics will work as normal. Treat us like colonized subjects, and… well, politics will work as normal.

If a Prime Minister were trying to guarantee their government would lose court challenges from Indigenous Peoples, they would say stupid stuff like this.

Mr. Poilievre has no idea what he’s talking about. He should ask for a briefing on the constitution, starting with S. 35.
