House Republicans blocked an amendment by Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D‑CO) that would have ensured no eligible married woman could be denied the right to vote because her ID didn’t match her married name. The amendment was part of a fight against the GOP-backed SAVE America Act — legislation pushed hard by Donald Trump to try and rig the midterm elections. Trump says if the Save Act is passed, Democrats will be shut out of power “for fifty years.”
Pettersen called out the hypocrisy:
“Donald Trump — the man who incited a violent insurrection after losing a free and fair election — wants to rig the election before it’s even happened.”
“He’s doing everything possible to stop people from showing up on election day — including making it harder for women to stay registered to vote…”
Her amendment wasn’t just about women. It also aimed to protect younger voters and people of color from barriers built into the bill. But Republicans shot it down, showing whose side they’re really on: rigging elections, not protecting voters.
Pettersen says she’s disappointed but not deterred, promising to continue the fight for fair, accessible elections where every eligible American — especially married women — can cast their ballot without obstruction.
This is voter suppression disguised as “election integrity.”
