It’s been over six and a half years. I didn’t know there would still be “firsts.”

We just got back from a family vacation where I experienced some firsts:

  • First time in a wheelchair taxi since using them for Dad back in the day

  • First time on a cruise since we took him in 2017

  • I even saw a passenger on board who reminded me of Dad — from his power wheelchair, to the strap across his forehead supporting his head and neck, to the family caregivers by his side

It was triggering.

But life doesn’t stop after loss.

We learn to live with the unexpected, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, reminders of those we have loved and lost.

This was a happy occasion. It was our first cruise with the kids!

So we soaked in some sunshine, admired the incredible views, and spent quality time as a family.

What have been some of your firsts since losing a loved one?
