That climate survival map going around right now? It's real science, simplified to the edge of misleading. The 2020 paper it's based on modeled where humans have historically lived by temperature. Here's what the viral version leaves on the table. Thread.

The underlying research is sound. "Future of the human climate niche" (Xu et al., PNAS 2020) modeled mean annual temperature ranges where 95% of humans have lived for the past 6,000 years, then projected how that band shifts with warming. That's a legitimate method. The map that went viral is a three-color summary of a 47-page study.

What the map hides: microclimates, ocean current collapse, infrastructure. A zone "projected to be temperate" in 2100 does not come with water, food networks, or power grids. You cannot relocate 3 billion people to highland Scotland. The map shows survivable temperature. It does not show survival. LOL
