Make money doing the work you believe in

Yesterday my 19-year-old daughter went to the beach.

At one point, her friends walked off to get food, leaving her alone.

An older man approached.

He started asking questions she didn’t want to answer.

She told him she wanted to be left alone.

He wouldn’t leave.

A few blankets down, a dad in his 40s noticed.

He walked over like he’d known her forever, started chatting, then casually told the man he had something he wanted to show him.

He steered him away.

Then he stayed nearby, just long enough to make sure the guy didn’t come back.

Later my daughter told me she and her friends have a name for men like him.

Girl dads.

Not their actual dads.

The middle-aged guys at the beach or the bar or the concert who notice when a young woman is getting cornered and quietly step in. No speeches. No heroics. No making it about themselves. They just look out for others.

She told me they’re rare.

But they exist.

And this one made her feel safe again in about ten seconds.

I don’t know what that man’s plans were for yesterday afternoon.

But he spent part of it looking out for someone else’s kid.

Mine.

Whoever you are, thank you.
