The Bee’s Knees
What kind of woman prays for rain? My queen bee, that’s who. She is just wired that way. A little drizzle lets her feel less guilty about sitting home. Avoiding the vale of tears out there. Out there, her cheeks get wet, rain or shine. Best not to leave the hive at all. With blue skies you can add shame to her reluctance. Sunshine leaves her no excuse for sitting things out. Avoiding the world. No rain gives her nothing to blame. But herself.
It’s not my place to remind her that her own clouds will pass just like the cotton balls up high. Not my job to remind her even if it does rain, we’ve got umbrellas. My job is to feed her and mind the joint. Try to keep things as sweet as honey.
I’m more worker bee than drone. She’s not much in the mood for love these days. Still, it could be worse, I suppose. She could be a black widow.
But I’m happy in my work. Busy as a, well, you know what. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s like I’ve been programmed. It’s my nature.
All of it this brings to mind a song, of course. Everything summons a tune, doesn’t it. But maybe not the one of which you’re thinking. I have in mind an oldie. A classic. It sums me up and I can’t deny it. The Duke himself said it best. “I got it bad (and that ain’t good).”
