Are we in India ready for the most important platform shift of our time or will we just be consumers of someone else’s AI stack?
One of the best parts of backing bold founders is knowing when to get out of the way. I recently exited a portfolio, a team that dared to build middleware infra for India’s financial ecosystem, before it was cool.
Seeing their journey from 2018, I fundamentally believe we can't afford to ignore the convergence of Foundational AI, Middleware, and Generative AI.
I’ve been thinking deeply about where this is all headed post meeting founders across domains over the last few months:
🟡 Why are we still chasing demos and not building infrastructure?
Foundational AI isn’t just about scale anymore, it’s about relevance. Where are India’s domain-specific models for agriculture, logistics, governance, Bharat-scale language processing? Can we solve hallucinations, bias, and model alignment our way or are we just waiting for OpenAI or Anthropic to solve it for us?
🟡 Why do we glorify applications while ignoring the middleware?
Kubernetes, Anyscale, KServe - Who in India is building the middleware for AI at scale? Who’s thinking about India-grade observability, cost controls, and latency in low-resource settings? Middleware is not sexy but it’s where the battle for AI-native infrastructure will be won.
🟡 Why are we using Generative AI to write emails when we could be accelerating scientific breakthroughs?
Where are the Indian startups using GenAI for drug discovery, satellite intelligence, rural healthcare, vernacular education? Why aren’t we building platforms that non-tech users across India can leverage meaningfully?
🔶️ And the real question: are we integrating these layers to build full-stack intelligence systems or just copying slides from Silicon Valley?
The next economic leap won’t come from another B2B SaaS tool. It’ll come from those who master this trifecta: Foundational AI x Middleware x GenAI: deeply integrated, deeply contextual, and unapologetically ambitious.
So… who’s building this in India?
