The reflecting pool has been refilled after substantial repairs that ultimately cost taxpayers $14.2 million, but clumps of green algae continue to float throughout the water, coating several areas of the bottom of the pool, including the east and west ends, near the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. An algae spot near the World War II Memorial also grew significantly larger due to the rain on Wednesday and Thursday, which created extremely hot, humid weather. (Photographers also captured images of buckets of Induclor, a chlorine compound used to control bacteria, algae, slime, and fungi in bodies of water, and an image of ducks swimming through a cleaning solution as organic matter was removed from the Reflecting Pool.)
While the algae floating to the surface is likely new and the obvious result of the extreme heat, Katie Martin, an Interior Department spokesperson, claims it is “residual algae from the supply lines which have been sitting dormant for eight weeks while construction has been taking place [and] it’s part of the normal startup process.”
Add egregious duck and wildlife murder to the list of Trump atrocities.
