The app for independent voices

Hey algorithm! Connect me with philosophers, scientists, neurodivergent folks, artists, and the like!

Some readers have noted that during the Chanos interview I was wearing cheap wired earbuds, and urged me to get a good mic and maybe a proper camera. I have those things … in New York, which is not where I am. Some may have noticed the short-sleeved shirt, and also the fact that I really need a haircut.

So, sorry if the visuals are a bit scrappy. But not having to worry too much about production values is part of what makes independent blogging/Substacking a joy.

Hallo

Today I start using Substack

I used to like Twitter but always felt very constrained by the 144 limit

This brought problems for the irony-challenged, who misunderstood a lot of what I was trying to say

This is a particular problem for me because I seem to be regarded as ‘on the left’ by people on the right, and' ‘on the right’ by people on the left

Apparently this makes me controversial, and therefore box office poison

You made it, you own it

You always own your intellectual property, mailing list, and subscriber payments. With full editorial control and no gatekeepers, you can do the work you most believe in.

Funnels are just the start. The real magic happens when conve…

At the end of last year, I was at a conference and heard Ryan Greenblatt give a talk on his new paper about AI deception, and I knew right away that we had to have him on the show.

For many years, technologists have been wondering what happens when AI is sufficiently smart or cunning to begin to u…
