Government biomedical R&D, absolute & relative to GDP
A couple things stand out:
The US absolutely dominates in absolute terms (no surprise there), but not in % of GDP so much. Small countries have an incentive to free ride here but quite a few don't
Turkey and Italy spend surprisingly much (I'm not totally confident in their numbers though)
I didn't expect The Netherlands to be #1 on % of GDP
The US is an outlier with its funding being almost entirely through directed to projects rather than general university funding
Note that I haven't included all countries. This is based on OECD/Eurostat data + an estimate for the UK. Missing, with significant budgets:
Japan (slightly bigger budget than Germany, 5000-8000 mio PPS, 0.14%GDP)
China (Very unclear data)
South Korea (~UK/Italy, 2600-3900 Mio PPS, 0.11% GDP)
