A review of Anton Jäger's Hyperpolitics: Extreme Politicization Without Political Consequences (Verso, 2025). This review examines Jäger's analysis of the transition from mass party politics through the postpolitical 1990s to our current condition of intense mobilisation without institutional capacity. The book offers crucial insights into why the populist left failed and what obstacles face any attempt at working-class political renewal. Given the book's scope and theoretical ambition, this review runs longer than I would have liked to engage properly with its arguments.
