To claim that violence and crime are down is not the same as people actually feeling safe. In authoritarian systems, “order” is often imposed…but the fear doesn’t disappear, it just shifts. Instead of fearing criminals, people begin fearing the government itself. Safety without freedom isn’t safety at all. When abuse of power replaces individual autonomy, the cost of that “order” becomes painfully clear.
