I’ve been a comics fan for more than six decades, and Marvel’s superheroes figured high in my reading soon as the British publisher Odhams began reprinting US material in its mid-1960s ‘Power Comics’ line. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Avengers… I happily embraced them all, even more so when I got to read the originals in colour.

So why did I find the just-released trailer for Avengers: Doomsday so drab and boring? The lack-lustre dialogue, the sedentary pacing, the absurd determination to cram characters in like sardines? Maybe all of those. Can’t say I’ll be rushing out to see this, when I’ve got so many vintage thrills sitting on my bookshelve.
