There is a Library of Alexandria’s worth of Substack writing about falling birth rates and a popular conceptual solution, pronatalism. Pronatalism as a solution to this problem gives me the heebie-jeebies. It treats people as instruments instead of as people. What I’d love to see explored, but haven’t really, is this: assume birth rates keep falling. What are the non-natalist (a-natalist?) ways to avert or mitigate economic disaster? What solutions that don’t entail placing orders for more babies should we be developing? What creative options can be explored? More of that, please.
