“Knowledge is nothing but a thing coming to know its own self. In the case of God, He cannot be known entirely, nor is He divisible so that He can be known in parts, nor is there any similitude between Him and His Creation. Thus, He can never be known. It is as Abu Bakr said: ‘The inability to know is itself knowledge.’ Thus, the only one you come to know when you know God is your own self, for He only deals with you as you are, according to your disposition.” - Ibn Arabi
Ibn Arabi teaches us that there can be no escape from knowing oneself, even though we often seek to escape from that knowledge, opting instead to know everything else.
However, since we are always only coming to know ourselves, whether we are aware of this fact or not, the one who knows that they are in fact knowing their own self in all things is the one who has presence, while the one who does not is the one who is heedless. Just as the one who sees the created things but does not witness them as God’s Manifestations is the one who is veiled.
