So many footballers come from poverty. Pelé and Maradona are the obvious, and best-known examples. How many all-time greats have come from rich families? Here’s a list:
Super-rich, billionaire-type family – None.
Wealthy family, above upper-middle class: One, Andrea Pirlo, whose family owned a steel business in northern Italy.
Upper-middle class, but not super wealthy: Three that I can think of. Kaká of Brazil, son of an engineer father and schoolteacher mother, who grew up in the affluent parts of São Paulo. Gerard Piqué of Spain, whose father was a businessman-lawyer, and the grandfather a director at FC Barcelona. Erling Haaland of Norway (OK, not yet an all-time great, but already has an amazing record), whose father was also a professional footballer who played in the Premier League.
(So, interestingly, two of the four came from families connected to elite-level football.)
The rich make money off the labour of the poor. True of capitalism, true of football.
