Whales, elephants, and wolves mourn their dead. Others do. One wolf I know howled for nearly a month after her mate died. His body was taken from her because they lived in a tiny enclosure in a zoo. After a month of howling, she never howled again. She lingered for years, her body refusing to give up her mortal shell despite her empty core. I am grateful to read Kendall’s story because it connected me to these whales more than all the other pictures and news stories combined.
