This summer, I revised my Week 1 plans to include a new assignment:
AI Policy Development.
I asked students to reflect on how AI tools help or hinder their learning so we could build a class policy based on their ideas. Their responses have been thoughtful, nuanced, and refreshingly honest.
Many see AI as a great brainstorming or outlining tool—but not a substitute for their own thinking.
They’re wary of overreliance and want clear boundaries. Several said: “If AI is doing all the work, I’m not really learning.”
They called for ethical guidelines: transparency, fair use, and discussions of bias.
It’s clear most students aren’t trying to cheat. They’re trying to understand how to grow with AI, not be replaced by it.
