The photo is not a fake; the Israeli military officially confirmed that the widely circulated image of the bound and stripped Palestinian detainee is authentic.
The image, which sparked international outrage, shows a blindfolded Palestinian man from Gaza stripped to his underwear and tied face down to a folding military cot. His hands are zip-tied behind his back, and a metal or wooden rod is strapped along his spine and legs to restrain him.
The photo originally appeared on a personal Instagram account belonging to an Israeli soldier. It was posted with the Hebrew caption "Good morning" before the account was deleted.
An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson confirmed via Israel's Army Radio that the footage is real and occurred at a military post in Beit Hanoun, Gaza.
The military stated that the treatment of the detainee "does not align with IDF values and regulations". A command level inquiry has been opened to investigate the soldiers involved.
Internal military reports indicate that while soldiers initially provided false accounts, one soldier eventually admitted to tying up the man, and another admitted to filming the incident.
Activists and journalists identified the soldiers as belonging to the Netzah Yehuda Battalion of the Kfir Brigade. It's a unit previously scrutinized for misconduct.
Human rights organizations, including Physicians for Human Rights Israel stated that both the cruel physical restraint and the public sharing of degrading images constitute severe violations of international law and potentially qualify as war crimes.
Because the military has not officially released the identity or location of the man in the photo, multiple families of missing Gazans are left in distress. At least two Palestinian mothers have come forward, each certain that the restrained man is her missing son based on his physical features and leg scars..
