How to be like a Minnesotan

My neighbor, Steve, is out snow-blowing the sidewalks again right now.

He’s wearing shorts, btw.

He does this every time it snows more than two inches. He does the entire block, both sides of the street.

I bring him a loaf of homemade sourdough.

Steve displayed Trump signs during the election time.

Amy, the neighbor between Steve and me, displays a pride flag and an “invitation to wiggle” walk sign on her front lawn.

I bring her sourdough when she feeds my dog when I can’t get home in time.

Amy has long chats with Steve about his grand kids while she’s weeding her garden.

I keep encouraging Steve to wiggle-walk when he snow-blows Amy’s sidewalk. I’m convinced that someday he will.

This is an example of hyper-local neighboring.

You all keep asking me what you can do to be more like Minnesota.

This.

Give a shit about your neighbors, no matter what signs they display.

I love you all fiercely.

EDITED UPDATE -

I just brought Steve the sourdough and learned he is battling cancer. I don’t care who he voted for, he’s a good guy facing a terrible disease with a positive attitude. He is sourdough-worthy.
