Jack-O (1995): The Pumpkin-Headed Slasher That Refuses to Die! π
Hello my dear horror friends and wonderful guests of TERRORFLIX! π Hope youβre all in the mood for some classic seasonal terror!
Jack-O is a delightfully cheesy 90s direct-to-video horror treat directed by Steve Latshaw and executive produced by the legendary Fred Olen Ray. The story follows the Kelly family in the quiet town of Oakmoor Crossing just before Halloween. An ancient curse, born from the hanging of a warlock named Walter Machen centuries ago, awakens when reckless teens disturb an old grave. This unleashes Jack-O β a demonic, scythe-wielding monster with a flaming jack-oβ-lantern for a head β who returns every Halloween to exact revenge on the descendants of those who wronged his master.
The film blends slasher thrills with supernatural revenge elements. What makes it memorable are its strong Halloween atmosphere, practical effects mixed with some early CGI, and that unforgettable villain design. Jack-O stalks victims through foggy streets, pumpkin patches, and suburban homes, delivering brutal kills with his deadly scythe. It also features great cameos from horror icons like Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and posthumous appearances by John Carradine and Cameron Mitchell.
While often compared to Pumpkinhead, Jack-O holds its own as a cult favorite for fans of low-budget 90s horror. It captures that perfect small-town Halloween vibe and remains a nostalgic gem for those who love practical monster mayhem and seasonal slashers.
