What is Schiele’s color? Whenever I think of Schiele I think orange. He uses everything, of course. The greens and blues that creep into hair and around eye sockets, the bruised purples. His color sense is total. But the orange is the one I think about the most, it runs from rust to near-vermilion to a robe the temperature of a struck match. I can’t always say what an artist’s color is. Some don’t have one. Not the way Schiele has orange. Color in Schiele is more than an expressive flourish. More on that in this month’s Schiele arc.
