1983 feels like a bit of a lost book at the moment. It didn’t get into shops in the same way as its predecessor, Villager, did and received zero reviews in the media. Now I know that my publisher, Unbound (who still will not pay me the £15k plus they owe me), were on their last legs when it was published, that makes more sense. The immense love the book has received on Substack, however, makes me feel hopeful that it will finally have its day when my new publisher puts it out in paperback.

I just finished reading

1983. What a delightful book!. Somehow he re-captured the magic and imagination of childhood, where anything can, and probably does, happen. Of course there are aliens spying on us. And those llamas are suspicious. I love how he portrays the people, especially the women. And the school … it makes me want to cry,…
