The Warning Sign Democrats Shouldn’t Ignore

A new NBC News poll contains both good news and a warning for Democrats.

The good news is obvious. Donald Trump’s approval rating is underwater, and Democrats currently hold a lead on the generic congressional ballot. Under normal circumstances, those numbers would suggest a favorable environment heading into the 2026 midterms.

But look a little closer.

Democrats lead the congressional ballot by about five points. While that’s a meaningful advantage, it remains smaller than the margins often seen before major wave elections. (It was 11 points in 2006 and 10 points in 2018.) Recent polling has also been fairly consistent, suggesting a Democratic edge but not the kind of overwhelming lead that typically signals a landslide.

That doesn’t mean Democrats are headed for disappointment. Republicans remain vulnerable, and Democrats are still favored to gain seats. But caution is warranted. Redistricting, political polarization, and the shrinking number of competitive districts mean that even a modest Democratic advantage may not be enough to guarantee control of the House - or result in a very small margin.

The warning sign is simple: the political environment favors Democrats, but it doesn’t yet point to a historic wave. There is still too much uncertainty—and too much political noise—to assume that 2026 will take care of itself.

Democrats would be wise to act as if every seat matters - because they do.
