The Soul of Our Nation
I was standing on a pedestrian overpass, a space meant for the public, when I was confronted by the very division that is tearing at our country.
A man with a cane approached me and began ripping my banners off the fence. He used so much force that he warped the metal S-hooks. I was left shaken—not just by the destruction of property, but by his total lack of regard for a fellow citizen standing right there, peacefully exercising her rights.
It leaves me with questions that I believe many of you are asking:
• Where is the warning? Under what authority is a private citizen allowed to unilaterally "enforce" their own will?
• Is it legal? Political signs are protected First Amendment activities. While agencies have rules, can they allow one sign and not another?
• Who benefits from this? My signs are repeatedly stolen, destroyed, or displaced. Who gains from silencing a voice they don't want to hear?
Who Is Fueling the Hate?
Look at the mailers in your box and the ads on your screen. The "end justifies the means" mentality has become a toxic standard in our politics, but it is ungodly and un-American.
An Un-American Path
America is at a crossroads, and we are in a battle for the soul of this nation. This election is not just Republican vs. Democrat or Right vs. Left—it is Right vs. Wrong.
We must condemn all political violence. Even when we disagree, there is no place for attacks like this in our community. Attacks on candidates during campaign season must stop. When you see this hatred, just ask: Who benefits from us being at each other's throats?
The battle should never be between "We the People." That is exactly what those in power want. They want us divided so we don't look at the true values of those running to represent us. When you see this hatred, just ask again: Who benefits?
I Want My America Back
This is not the America I came to 40 years ago. The America I know—one of civility, respect, and the "live and let live" spirit—feels like it is slipping away.
May God bring us peace and civility during this campaign season. And yes, I pray for the man who ripped down my signs, too. We need healing more than we need hostility. Unite for good!
