The only thing to fear is fear itself. FDR spoke that line nearly a century ago, but it holds up as key tenet of this American moment. Fear is scary because making opponents afraid is a core ingredient of authoritarian-leaning leadership. Are we seeing rising levels of fear across American institutions and businesses? I'm afraid so.

Somebody recently asked me to track down hip-hop songs not in 4/4. For a highly rhythmic genre, it was an oddly difficult task

The large, large majority of hip-hop is in 4/4. You can occasionally find stuff in 6/8, like “Spaceship” by Kanye West and “My 1st Song” by Jay-Z. I had to dig deep for something in 5/4. All I’ve got is Eminem’s deep cut “Underground.” For a highly rhythmic medium, it’s honestly a bit odd that hip-hop doesn’t move outside the 4/4 paradigm more often.

Amongst all the other chaos, I missed this.

Politics Politics Politics surpassed the number of subscribers I had on Patreon early this month. We’d been a few dozen short after the election but the last month has seen an increase.

But that is also very notable! In the Off Off Year last cycle (2021) we did not gain subscribers on Patreon. We slowly deflated, which I wrote off as part of the bizarre media cycle that comes with politics.

Substack is incredibly aggressive when it comes to growth. I’m very happy to be on a platform that cares about that.
