In general, based on a matter of fact observation, Scotland is a progressive left of centre nation, it’s part of our national psyche, or you might even say it's in our blood. Reactionary right wing politics has rarely sat well here with the people, if ever.
Labour supporters deserted the Scottish Labour Party because in a changing world Westminster Labour was moving away from that progressive reality, toward the centre and the right of party politics and the SNP were then perceived as the progressive party in Scotland, they still are, hence the continuing shift. The Labour Party presumably changed direction under its leadership, in hopes to ride the wave of English populism to gain votes. This neutered the Scottish Labour Party, because they were tetherd to Westminster new direction policy decisions.
If Scottish Labour came to its senses here in Scotland and severed the bonds of thralldom to the Westminster Labour Party, they will be enabled to purse true and firm progressive left of centre policies once again in an Independent Scotland.
A return to the values of it's founding members Keir Hardie and perhaps more importantly Robert Cunninghame Graham, who eventually went on to be a founder of the Scottish National Party, would resonate with the Scottish electorate.
Which is why I don't rule out a path way of a return to Scottish Labour and progressive socialist politics in the future, if they wised up and like canny Scots start to look after the interests of the majority of our citizens, not just the wealthy few, or those that harbour the wrong take on Nationalism of the type that created Little England.
Civic Nationalism is a good thing, the SNP recognise this, in Scotland they are the progressive party, of the people.
