I appreciate this clear explanation, thank you. I was reminded of the “second goat” on Israel’s Day of Atonement. That goat is literally called the “azazel” which is from a verb that means to remove completely, or disappear. It was the goat of the disappearance. It would be led away into the wilderness - so far that it would never return - it disappeared. Just before that, the priest had laid hands on the Azazel’s head, to impart all Israel’s iniquities and “attach” them to the goat’s head with a red cord - symbolically attaching all the sin and failure to the goat’s head with a scarlet woollen thread. He became sin so that he could take away (remove completely, disappear) the sin of Israel.
